Products containing batteries (or any hazardous products) that arrive at ShipBob fulfillment centers without prior approval or that fall outside any requirements specified by ShipBob will be considered non-compliant and will be returned to you at your cost. If the product cannot be safely returned it will be disposed of at the client’s cost.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL BATTERIES:

ShipBob accepts Lithium-Ion Batteries, Lithium Metal Batteries, and Dry Cell Alkaline Batteries (AA/AAA/C/D) with restrictions:

  • A MSDS and a UN Test (lithium batteries only) must be submitted and approved by ShipBob prior to sending inventory to a ShipBob Fulfillment Center. Submissions can be made to your sales representative, account manager, or by emailing support@shipbob.com.

  • Written confirmation must be received from ShipBob confirming if the number of batteries per order is restricted. In most cases, items containing batteries are limited to two items per order. Prior to shipping any batteries, please make sure to have written confirmation from ShipBob if there is a limit and if so that it has been enabled on your account.

  • The product can be stored at room temperature

  • The product does not require special handling equipment

  • The MSDS has not expired

  • The product must comply with ShipBob’s Prohibited Item’s Policy

BULK SHIPPING:

While most parcel orders containing batteries require a limit of items per order, ShipBob can still ship freight orders with more than 2 items per order. Enabling the “auto split” feature for you direct to consumer orders will not impact B2B orders using freight shipping.


GENERALLY ACCEPTED BATTERY REQUIREMENTS:

Products containing batteries that fall within the weight, watt-hours, and quantities listed below can generally be shipped domestically in the US with any carrier service. Note that your battery is still subject to approval by ShipBob. You must receive permission from our Sales or Merchant Care Team prior to sending the inventory to ShipBob’s Fulfillment Network.

If your battery falls outside of the watt-hour, quantity, or weight restrictions listed below, ShipBob may still be able to support your device with additional restrictions and requirements. Please reach out to our Sales or Merchant Care team with your MSDS and UN Test for assistance.

Lithium-Ion Battery Requirements:

  1. The battery is installed in the device and falls under the below regulation:

    1. UN 3481, PI966 Section II, Lithium-Ion Batteries / Cells

      1. Cells equal to or less than 20Wh; Batteries equal to or less than 100Wh.

  2. Each device falls under one of the below quantity and weight limits :

    1. Device contains equal to or less than 2 batteries AND the total weight of the batteries is less than 11lbs

    2. Device contains more than two batteries AND all batteries within the device are button cells (also called coin cells) AND package does not exceed 5.5 lbs


Lithium Metal Battery Requirements

  1. The battery is installed in the device and falls under the below regulation:

    1. UN 3091, PI969 Section II, Lithium Metal Batteries / Cells

      1. Cells equal to or less than 1g; Batteries equal to or less than 2g

  2. Each device falls under one of the below quantity and weight limits :

    1. Device contains equal to or less than 2 batteries AND the total weight of the batteries is less than 11lbs

    2. Device contains more than two batteries AND all batteries within the device are button cells (also called coin cells) AND package does not exceed 5.5 lbs


Dry Cell Alkaline Batteries (AA/AAA/C/D)

(Includes Alkali-Magnese, Zinc-Carbon, Nickel Cadmium, and Nickel Metal)

  1. Each battery is less than 9 volts.

  2. The battery falls under one of the following categories:

    1. Battery terminal is packed with the device AND the battery terminals are surrounded by hard plastic wrap.

    2. Battery is contained within the device AND there is a pull tab to deactivate batteries from a complete circuit.


INBOUND RECEIVING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Products must be completely enclosed in inner packaging then placed in a strong rigid outer packaging.

  • Products must be secured against any movement within the outer packaging and must be equipped with an effective means of preventing accidental activation.

  • The required lithium battery labels are required on the outside packaging of all inbounds containing products with lithium batteries.

  • All inbound shipments must be in accordance with ICAO/IATA, as well as with applicable conditions and limitations of 49 CFR.


ORDER REQUIREMENTS

  • The packaging selection must be “Box” for all products containing batteries.

  • In most cases, a maximum of two devices containing batteries can be shipped per order. Any orders containing more than two batteries must be split into multiple orders.

    • Merchant’s must have written confirmation from our Sales or Merchant Care representatives that the auto-splitting feature is correctly set up within ShipBob’s Dashboard.
